An twin engined plane forced to have emrgency landing and only 9 survived the plane landed near a remote South Australian farming property in the state's far north.

The plane, carrying passengers from Maree to Broken Hill, experienced technical difficulties shortly after taking off.

A police spokeswoman said the pilot was attempting to return to Marree when he could not maintain altitude and was forced to land in a clearing on the Frome Creak Flood Plain near Mundowna Station, about 25km southeast of Marree.

The downed plane's emergency beacon was activated and police said another local aircraft was believed to have located it.
